Hot, dry conditions cause a decrease in nutrient uptake, plant growth, and overall yield. Heat also causes the crucial hormone, cytokinin, to break down in the plant. Cytokinin starts to break down in small grains at 21ºC and 28ºC plus in other crops.
Why is this important?
The breakdown of cytokinin is what typically leads to tip-back and kernel loss in corn, flower abortion and pod loss in canola & soybeans, and seed abortion in small grains.
